Paul Merson states his prediction for Man United v Southampton in EFL Cup final
The ex-Arsenal midfielder is siding with Manchester United to win the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to beat Southampton and lift the EFL Cup at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils have made some good progress in the cup competitions over the past couple of weeks as Jose Mourinho’s side close in on a famous treble.
Manchester United eased into the FA Cup last eight thanks to a 2-1 win against Championship side Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Sunday afternoon.
The 20-time English champions will now take on Premier League leaders Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge next month.
Mourinho’s side secured their place in the Europa League last 16 after a 4-0 aggregate win against Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in France on Wednesday evening.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the EFL Cup showpiece at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, Merson explained why he is tipping Manchester United to win.
“I’ve got to side with Manchester United overall,” Merson said.
“I don’t know if it will go to extra time or not but to eventually lift the cup, I think it will be United. Southampton have got no Virgil van Dijk, although the chance I do give them is because Manolo Gabbiadini is there.
“I like him, he’s a good footballer, a great goalscorer and I don’t think they will have a lorry load of chances to score, so you want someone there who will put the ball into the back of the net and he will do that.”
Manchester United won the FA Cup last season after a 2-1 extra-time win against Crystal Palace under Louis van Gaal.
