Martin Keown: Why something special is happening at Chelsea
The former Arsenal defender has been impressed with Chelsea's squad depth
Martin Keown has hailed Chelsea’s squad depth in the title race, insisting that something special is happening at Stamford Bridge.
Antonio Conte took over the reins at the Stamford Bridge outfit after Chelsea finished in tenth place following a disappointing defence of their Premier League title.
The west London side signed five players in the summer transfer window, including David Luiz in a £32m deal from Paris Saint-Germain and N’Golo Kante in a £34m transfer from Leicester City.
Chelsea won their opening three games before back-to-back losses to title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Blues haven’t looked back since those defeats, though. Chelsea have won 15 of their last 16 games in the Premier League.
Chelsea captain John Terry and World Cup winner Ceac Fabregas have struggled to get into Conte’s team such is the competition for places.
Speaking to BT Sport, Keown hailed Chelsea and their depth in the title race.
“It’s a belief that grows through the season. They were 13 games unbeaten. They’re almost striking excellent at the moment. Look at their team – how many teams can call on Terry, Zouma and Fabregas. They’ve got an outstanding squad to call upon and add to that a special manager. There is something special happening,” Keown said.
Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday night.
