Martin Keown’s response when asked if Arsene Wenger could stick with Arsenal man in new role
The former Arsenal defender believes Arsene Wenger won't be afraid to stick with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could continue in a central midfield role if the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was impressed with the England star’s performance, according to Martin Keown.
The England international was moved into the middle of the park for their trip to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round at the weekend in the absence of the suspended Granit Xhaka.
Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of the north London side’s most impressive players even if Theo Walcott stole the headlines with a hat-trick at St Mary’s.
Wenger has alternated between Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny and Xhaka in the Arsenal midfield this term, with Santi Cazorla still sidelined due to injury.
Speaking about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance at his former club Southampton, ex-Arsenal defender Keown discussed the likelihood of Oxlade-Chamberlain continuing in that role.
“It was almost by accident they found his rightful position. Arsene Wenger will act on it. If he sees something he likes, he’ll keep it that way,” Keown told BT Sport’s FA Cup Tonight show.
Arsenal will play non league side Sutton United in the FA Cup fifth round after their 5-0 win against the Saints.
