Martin Keown’s response when asked whether midfielder is good enough for Arsenal
The former Arsenal defender has his say on Francis Coquelin after Wednesday night's 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich
Martin Keown has claimed that Francis Coquelin was trying too hard to keep tabs on Arjen Robben during Arsenal’s 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
Coquelin started in midfield alongside summer signing Granit Xhaka for the Champions League last-16 clash at Allianz Arena as Arsene Wenger looked to navigate a route into the quarter-final stage for the first time in six seasons.
However, the French defensive midfielder was unable to prevent Robben from breaking the deadlock in the first half as the former Chelsea winger curled a delicious finish past Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina.
The 25-year-old finished with just 67 per cent pass completion in a disappointing performance against the Bundesliga holders.
Asked if Coquelin is good enough for Arsenal during a question and answer session on The Daily Mail on Thursday afternoon,ex Keown said:
“An awful lot has been asked of Coquelin. There is a lot on his shoulders. He was almost working too hard in trying to anticipate Robben last night and ended up opening the door for him. He needed to be patient. No one is looking to stop Robben shooting with his dangerous left foot.”
Arsenal are in fourth place in the Premier League table and 10 points behind current leaders Chelsea after their 2-0 win against Hull City at the Emirates Stadium last time out.
