Paul Scholes reacts to Eric Bailly’s display in Man United’s 3-0 win over Saint-Etienne
The former Manchester United midfielder gives his blunt verdict on Eric Bailly's performance
Paul Scholes delivered a blunt verdict on Eric Bailly’s performance after the defender struggled during Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Saint-Etienne on Thursday night.
The Ivory Coast international started at the heart of the Manchester United defence alongside captain Chris Smalling for the visit of the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 clash.
Summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the deadlock in the first half with a deflected free-kick as the Swedish centre-forward netted hi 21st goal of the 2016-17 campaign in all competitions.
However, Manchester United almost conceded an away goal after Bailly’s poor back pass presented the visitors with a chance to beat Argentinian goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
Speaking to BT Sport after Bailly’s error-strewn performance in the first half at Old Trafford, Scholes said:
“He is off the pace. He started bad and got progressively worse as the half wore on.”
Ibrahimovic scored his second of the night after half-time before a late penalty sealed his hat-trick and a 3-0 win.
Bailly moved to Manchester United in a £30m deal from Villarreal in the summer transfer window.
The Ivorian defender was the first of Jose Mourinho’s four summer signings.
