Paul Scholes reacts to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal in Man United’s 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne in Europa League
The former Manchester United midfielder delivers his verdict on Henrikh Mkhitaryan's opener
Paul Scholes hailed Manchester United’s excellent team goal after Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s opener in Wednesday evening’s 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne.
The Red Devils made the short trip to France looking to build on their 3-0 win at Old Trafford last week after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s hat-trick.
And Mkhitaryan effectively ended any prospect of an unlikely Saint-Etienne comeback after the attacking midfielder opened the scoring in the 16th minute.
Juan Mata received the ball in midfield before the Spain international guided a low cross into the area which Mkhitaryan managed to deflect into the French side’s net.
The Armenia midfielder was forced off minutes later with a suspected hamstring injury ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
Speaking to BT Sport about Mkhitaryan’s goal in Manchester United’s 1-0 win in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie, Scholes said:
“Pogba won a good ball in midfield and from there, it’s total control. Juan Mata started on the righthand side and he has a great touch and control. The ball for Mkhitaryan was excellent. It was guided around two defenders and it was a lovely finish as well.”
Manchester United will take on Premier League leaders Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final in a positive start to 2017 for Jose Mourinho’s side.
