Paul Scholes hailed a perfect result for Manchester United after Thursday night’s 3-0 win against Saint-Etienne at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils make a 15th-minute breakthrough after Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired a low, deflected free-kick past the Saint-Etienne goalkeeper to score his 21st goal of the season in all competitions.

The hosts managed to extend their lead in the second half through the 35-year-old centre-forward as he netted his third goal of the Europa League campaign with 19 minutes to play at Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions effectively ended the tie ahead of the return leg after Ibrahimovic won a late penalty which the Swedish striker converted to seal his hat-trick.

Speaking to BT Sport after Manchester United’s resounding 3-0 win against the Ligue 1 side, Scholes accepted that the hosts had benefited from a couple of soft decisions from the officials in the last-32 clash.

“The officials were good for Manchester United [on Thursday night]. It was a soft penalty. He steps up and takes it,” Scholes said.

Scholes added: “I do feel a little bit sorry for them. They should and could have scored at least one goal. It is a great result for Manchester United. It’s just what they wanted going into a busy run of games. They can afford to rest people now for the big cup final.”
