Pundit explains why Chelsea star is player of the year (not Eden Hazard or Diego Costa)
Paul Merson says N'Golo Kante is the leading candidate to win the PFA player of the year award this season
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante is the leading candidate to win the PFA player of the year award this season, ahead of the likes of Eden Hazard.
The French midfielder has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season since his arrival at Chelsea from Leicester City last summer.
Kante earned plenty of new admirers last season as his superb midfield performances for the Foxes helped Claudio Ranieri’s men win the title.
The midfielder has continued his fine form for the Blues and has been a regular fixture in Antonio Conte’s side to help them build a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
And Merson feels that Kante is the leading candidate to win the player of the year award given the huge impact he has had at Chelsea this season.
Merson told Sky Sports News HQ: “I’m going to go for Kante.
“I know I could pick Hazard, I could pick Costa but for him [Kante] to win the league with someone [Leicester] then join another team [Chelsea].
“He has been the difference. Leicester have missed him and he’s gone to Chelsea and he’s been phenomenal.
“He covers every blade of grass. He’s getting better and better. I have to say him.”
Kante will be hoping to feature for Chelsea when the Blues take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.
