Pundit explains why David Luiz deserves extra Chelsea praise
Pat Nevin heaps praise on David Luiz for his willingness to play through pain for Chelsea this season
David Luiz deserves praise for playing through the pain barrier with Chelsea in recent games, according to Pat Nevin.
The Brazilian defender has earned plenty of praise for his performances for the Blues since his arrival back at Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Luiz has been a regular fixture in the starting line-up for Chelsea in recent months and has been one of the Blues’ most consistent performers.
The 29-year-old has started 21 of Chelsea’s Premier League games this term to help Antonio Conte’s men build an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Luiz once again played through the pain barrier with a heavily strapped knee during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
And former Chelsea man Nevin feels that the Brazilian deserves special praise for keeping going against the Clarets.
Writing in his column for Chelsea’s website, Nevin said: “David Luiz, more than most, showed a willingness to grind it out in those conditions even though he was clearly carrying a fairly debilitating injury.
“It is also particularly hard to be creative when most of the elements are conspiring against you but the players rolled their sleeves up (metaphorically at least) and just got on with it.
“This was always going to be a tough fixture as Burnley’s home form underlined, but it had to be faced.”
Chelsea finished 10th and without a trophy last season after a campaign to forget.
