Owen Hargreaves has claimed that Liverpool would be serious contenders for the Premier League title this season if they had N’Golo Kante in their team.

The French midfielder has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent players since his arrival at Chelsea from Leicester City in the summer transfer window.

Kante earned plenty of new admirers following his sparkling displays for Leicester City last season as he helped the Foxes win the Premier League title.

And the midfielder has continued his fine form for Chelsea, helping them to build a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool have slipped off the pace in the race for the title and dropped down to fifth place and 13 points behind leaders Chelsea after their shock 2-0 loss to Hull City on Saturday.

And former Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves feels that the Reds would benefit from a player of Kante’s mold this season.

Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Hargreaves said: “Liverpool need a defensive thinker in that midfield.

“If they had a player like Kante, then I genuinely believe that they could compete to win the league.

“Kante literally does the work for two players.”
