Pundit: Man United playmaker’s transformation has been exquisite
Danny Murphy heaps praise on Juan Mata following his recent good form for Manchester United
Danny Murphy has heaped praise on Juan Mata following the Spanish playmaker’s impressive form for Manchester United this season.
The Spanish playmaker arrived at Old Trafford from Chelsea in January 2014 after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge by then manager Jose Mourinho.
However, Mata has been a regular fixture in Manchester United’s team since Mourinho’s appointment at Old Trafford last summer.
The playmaker score Manchester United’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Watford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
And former Liverpool midfielder Murphy has been very impressed by what he has seen from Mata under Mourinho this season.
Speaking on BBC Sport’s Match of the Day, Murphy said: “The transformation has been amazing at Manchester United for Juan [Mata].
“He’s knuckled down and got himself back in the side.
“Actually out of all the striking options and wider roles, he’s become the most reliable goalscorer.
“He’s calm in front of goal – he’s inventive and creative. He was clever and just so exquisite in the technical aspect of the game.
“He’s probably one of the first names on the team sheet.”
Manchester United are looking to break back into the top four this season under Mourinho following their fifth-placed finish last term under Louis van Gaal.
Mourinho was brought in last May after the sacking of the Dutchman.
