Pundit: This is what Alexis Sanchez will be thinking about Arsenal situation
Danny Murphy explains why Arsenal should be worried about Alexis Sanchez's future at The Emirates
Alexis Sanchez wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that he is better than the current situation at Arsenal, Danny Murphy has claimed.
The Gunners forward was the only one of Arsene Wenger’s players to emerge with any credit after the north London side suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Arsenal are now facing an uphill battle to secure a place in the last-eight of the competition for the first time in six years despite Sanchez scoring what initially appeared to be a valuable away goal.
The Chile international still hasn’t signed a new contract with the north London club despite negotiations between the two parties rumbling on for a few months.
Writing in his London Evening Standard column, former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Murphy offered some insight into what Sanchez will be thinking about the latest Arsenal crisis.
“It’s not only Wenger who I expect to leave, either. When you watch Alexis Sanchez, the vibe you get is that he wants more.
“He wants to challenge for league titles and the Champions League and, when he joined Arsenal in 2014, he probably believed that would happen but they haven’t made progress.
“Sanchez’s contract expires at the end of next season and the club are desperate for him to sign a new one.
“But I wouldn’t blame him if he now thinks: “I am better than this”.
“There will be bigger, more successful clubs than Arsenal who look at Sanchez and think: ‘He will do for us’.”
Sanchez moved to Arsenal in a big-money deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in 2014.
