Ray Wilkins: Why Chelsea must not let this player leave the club

Ray Wilkins talks up Diego Costa's importance to Chelsea this season ahead of Sunday's trip to Burnley

Ray Wilkins says Diego Costa has proved himself as a key member of the Chelsea squad with his ability to “ruffle up” opponents this season.

The Spain international has been in fine form in the Premier League this season after the appointment of Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Costa has already scored 15 Premier League goals for the Blues to help them build a nine-point lead at the top of the table and establish themselves as the firm favourites to win the title.

The striker never seems to be far away from controversy on the pitch but there can be no doubting his importance to the Chelsea side.

And Wilkins has revealed just why he is such a big fan of the physical centre-forward.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Wilkins said: “Costa is a throw-back. He beats up centre-halves.

“He ruffles everyone’s feathers and is good to watch.

“You can see when it gets tight for Chelsea he’s looking to upset someone, get the crowd going. He’s a good footballer.”
