The Arsenal striker has only recently returned to first-team action for the north London side after missing most of the season with a serious knee injury.
Welbeck will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the Arsenal team in the coming weeks and months as he bids to help Arsene Wenger’s men win a trophy this term.
It remains to be seen whether Welbeck will feature for Arsenal when the Gunners take on Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night.
But Ferdinand, who played with Welbeck during his time at Manchester United, is confident that the striker can play a big role if called upon by Wenger in the coming weeks.
Writing in his column for The London Evening Standard, Ferdinand said: Arsenal should pick Danny Welbeck in their starting line-up against Bayern.
“He had a knack when he was at Manchester United of playing well in key games away from home. For example, I remember him scoring against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu in the last 16 four years ago.
“He is one of the freshest players Arsenal have right now because he’s only just come back from injury and will also have a real hunger to make up for lost time.
“Danny gives them a different option: he’s strong, he’s quick, very good on the ball and he can score a goal. Experience in such huge games counts for a lot.”
