Rio Ferdinand sets Man United’s targets for the season

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United must qualify for next season's Champions League under Jose Mourinho

Rio Ferdinand has challenged Manchester United to either finish in the top four or win the Europa League this season.

The Red Devils are currently getting used to life under new boss Jose Mourinho following the Portuguese coach’s appointment as the club’s new manager last summer.

Mourinho’s men are sixth in the Premier League table as they look to finish as highly as possible under new boss Mourinho.

The former Chelsea manager has been tasked with steering Manchester United back into the Champions League in his first campaign in charge.

The Red Devils know that they will secure a spot in next season’s Champions League if they win the Europa League this term.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand is keen to see the Red Devils book their spot in the Champions League, one way or the other.

Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday night, Ferdinand said: “To continue their progression, they either need to finish in the top four or win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League, because that was the remit at the beginning of the season.

“That’s huge pressure but a man like Jose Mourinho has the ability to do that.”
