Charlie Nicholas states his prediction for Saint-Etienne v Man United
Charlie Nicholas explains why he thinks Saint-Etienne will beat Manchester United on Wednesday
Charlie Nicholas is tipping Saint-Etienne to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the return leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils have one foot in the last 16 of Europe’s second tier club competition after Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired them to a 3-0 win over the Ligue 1 side at Old Trafford last week.
Manchester United are looking to continue their progress in Europe as they bid to win the competition in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign in charge.
Arsenal legend Nicholas was not particularly impressed by what he saw from Manchester United against Saint-Etienne last week, and although he is backing the French side to claim victory, a 1-0 win for the home team would still see the Red Devils through.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “The job is done with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford, even though they didn’t play well that well in the first leg.
“I’ve been to St Etienne a few times as a fan and while they don’t get huge numbers it’s quite a hostile stadium to go into.
“With the EFL Cup final coming up at the weekend, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be rested.
“I think Jose Mourinho will still go with a strong backline though to ensure they’ve got a solid base.”
A footnote added: “Charlie predicts: 1-0 and Hamouma to score first.”
Manchester United were 2-1 winners over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon as they set up a quarter-final showdown with Chelsea.
