Sir Alex Ferguson scouted this summer Man United signing, reveals ex-manager
Rene Meulensteen reveals Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson was keeping tabs on Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Sir Alex Ferguson eyed Henrikh Mkhitaryan as a potential Manchester United signing before the midfielder moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2013, according to Rene Meulensteen.
The Armenia international was the third of Jose Mourinho’s summer signings after the attacking midfielder completed a £30m move to Old Trafford from the Bundesliga giants.
Mkhitaryan made a slow start to his Red Devils career but the Armenian playmaker has come into his own in recent weeks after a return of two goals and three assists in his last 10 appearances.
The 28-year-old established himself as an exciting talent on the European stage during a three-year stay at Westfalenstadion under first Jurgen Klopp and then Thomas Tuchel.
Speaking to talkSPORT about the Manchester United midfielder, former Fulham boss Meulensteen revealed that ex-manager Ferguson was a keen admirer of Mkhitaryan.
“When he was much younger, before he joined Dortmund, we were actually looking at him. I remember the name very clearly!
“We felt he was not ready but he is, in my opinion, a typical Man United player. He is quick, he is creative, he has got assists in him, he has got goals in him.
“I am really, really pleased he has found his feet and is performing to his best.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of current leaders and their FA Cup quarter-final opponents Chelsea in the title race.
