Steven Gerrard: This Chelsea star was man of the match at Liverpool, not David Luiz
Steven Gerrard singles out N'Golo Kante for special praise after Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Liverpool
Steven Gerrard has claimed that N’Golo Kante was the real man of the match in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Blues defender David Luiz took home the award after scoring the west London side’s opening goal with a superb free-kick in the 21st minute on Merseyside.
Chelsea ended up being pegged back when Georginio Wijnaldum headed home in the 57th minute to draw Liverpool level.
Diego Costa missed a late penalty as the two teams ended up sharing the spoils at Anfield.
Luiz was named as the official man of the match on BT Sport, but Gerrard felt that Kante was more deserving of the trophy after his sparkling display in central midfield for the visitors.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Gerrard said: “He’s a nightmare to play against.
“I used to hate playing against Claude Makelele and I wouldn’t like to play against him.
“He was man of the match tonight, not David Luiz. Luiz scored a wonderful free-kick but Kante was man of the match.”
Chelsea now turn their attentions back towards their Premier League clash with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.
