Chelsea’s ability to go to their title rivals and secure positive results will make them successful under Antonio Conte, according to Steven Gerrard.

The Blues made the long journey to the red half of Merseyside on Tuesday night in search of a result that would edge them further clear in the title race.

And Chelsea made the breakthrough in the first half thanks to David Luiz’s 24th-minute free-kick which caught out Simon Mignolet at his near post.

Liverpool did manage to peg back Chelsea through Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum’s header but the west London side could savour a valuable point on a night where Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur failed to capitalise.

Speaking to BT Sport after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield, ex-captain Gerrard lifted the lid on why he thinks the west London outfit will enjoy success under their Italian coach.

“There were a lot of positives. I thought Liverpool were very good tonight. On the balance of play they probably deserved three points,” Gerrard said.

“But the reason Chelsea have been so successful under Jose Mourinho and probably why they’ll be successful under Antonio Conte is because they come to places like Anfield and without shine or playing attractive football, they get big positive results that, over the course of 38 games, are vital.”

Chelsea will host title rivals Arsenal in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
