Paul Merson states prediction for Sutton United v Arsenal
Paul Merson doesn't expect Arsenal to slip up against Sutton United in the FA Cup this weekend...
Paul Merson has played down the chance of Sutton United pulling off “the biggest shock in the history of football” when the Non-League side host Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners lost 5-1 to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night to leave Arsene Wenger’s long-term future at The Emirates in doubt.
Arsenal haven’t progressed past the round of 16 in the past six seasons and the north London side are facing another disappointing European campaign ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round clash.
Wenger’s side were 5-0 winners against Southampton at St Mary’s in the fourth round thanks to Theo Walcott’s hat-trick, while their Non-League opponents eased to a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.
Writing in his Sky Sports column ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup fixtures, Merson backed Arsenal to avoid an upset after tipping the Gunners to ease to a 3-0 win.
“If they were to lose this it would be the ultimate humiliation. It would be the biggest shock in the history of football. If it was a boxing match it wouldn’t be allowed.
“I have to say Arsenal will win, but I hope Sutton score a goal. Their players have an unbelievable opportunity to write history and I hope they give their all and leave everything out there on the pitch.”
Arsenal are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
