Watch Philippe Coutinho struggle to recreate this iconic Liverpool goal
The Liverpool number 10 attempted to emulate Steven Gerrard's memorable strike against Olympiacos
Philippe Coutinho is one of the biggest names in the current Liverpool squad but even the Brazilian magician is no match for club legend Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool number 10 was tasked with recreating Gerrard’s iconic strike against Olympiacos in the Champions League in 2005.
The former Reds captain hit a sumptuous half volley in the 87th minute to seal a 3-1 win and secure Liverpool’s progress to the Champions League knockout phase with Rafael Benitez’s men needing to win by a two-goal margin.
Liverpool, of course, went on to win Europe’s premier club competition thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout after coming from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Italian giants AC Milan in normal time in the Istanbul final.
Coutinho, who has scored many wonder goals of his own, attempted to emulate Gerrard’s incredible goal during a segment with BT Sport with help from James Milner and Divock Origi.
However, as you can see in the above clip, the Brazilian struggled to keep his four efforts on target which served to highlight Gerrard’s impressive technique to land one of the Champions League’s most-memorable strikes.
