Antonio Conte has heaped praise on Cesc Fabregas for the way in which he has acted despite his lack of playing time at Chelsea this season.

The Spanish midfielder has found his first-team opportunities to be few and far between this term following Conte’s arrival at Stamford Bridge last summer.

Fabregas has been limited to just seven Premier League starts this season following the arrival of N’Golo Kante from Leicester City last summer.

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old has regularly earned praise for his impressive performances for the Blues despite his lack of game-time this term.

And the way in which the former Arsenal captain has applied himself this season has delighted his new manager at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Friday, Conte said: “Cesc is showing he has a great impact for us. I hope to finish the season in the right way and to try to win (trophies).

“But for sure Cesc has shown himself to be a great professional but, above all, a great player.

“I’m very pleased to see that in him, his commitment and work-rate. This season he faced a new situation.

“In the past, Cesc has always played every single game. It’s not easy to change.

“But, for sure, Cesc showed me that he is not only a great player but a great person.

“I think, this season, he has improved a lot in all aspects and, for me, he is a really, really important player.”

Chelsea are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they look to take a step closer towards winning the title.
