Ex-midfielder: Jose Mourinho shouldn’t start Anthony Martial for Chelsea v Man United
The former Manchester United captain criticises Anthony Martial's form under Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho shouldn’t start disappointing Anthony Martial for Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea in the FA Cup last eight at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
The Red Devils will be looking to ease into the last four of the competition and edge a step closer to winning their second major trophy under new manager Mourinho.
The 20-time English champions were 3-2 winners against Southampton in the EFL Cup final thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 87th-minute winner at Wembley.
Martial has struggled to make an impact under Mourinho this season after a disappointing return of eight goals and four assists in 27 appearances in all competitions this term.
The France forward netted 11 times in 49 games under Louis van Gaal before Mourinho’s appointment as the Dutch coach’s successor.
Speaking to Paddy Power about Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, Ince said:
“Personally, I wouldn’t play Anthony Martial up front. For most of the season he has been anonymous. He hasn’t seemed right mentally, and for a little while his personal life was being dragged into the press.
“When he first came to United, he was absolutely outstanding. There’s no doubt he has taken a dip since then, although he looks to be getting back there. He’s frightening when he comes in from that left-hand side and makes things happen.”
Chelsea were 4-0 winners against bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League in October, although the Red Devils haven’t lost a domestic game since that Stamford Bridge defeat.
