David Luiz has confirmed that he will not need surgery on his knee injury and is looking forward to giving himself a rest during the international break.

The Brazilian has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers this season following his arrival back at the club in the summer transfer window from Paris Saint-Germain.

Luiz has slotted effortlessly into Antonio Conte’s team this season and has been in fine form for the Blues, helping the west London club to build a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Brazilian has been struggling with a niggling knee injury this season and has been playing with his leg strapped in recent weeks.

However, he has played down the seriousness of the problem, and insists that the international break will allow him the perfect break to give his knee a rest.

Speaking to The London Evening Standard, Luiz said: “The international break gives me a good chance to rest my knee. It’s a very good thing for me.

“Only I feel the pain so nobody knows [how hard it’s been to cope with]. But we have amazing medical staff and they have been great with me.

“Every single match, every single player they are there for every player. They have helped me a lot.

“I won’t need an operation in the summer. But it’s very good for me to rest, not just the knee, but the body as well.

“I am disappointed to not be in the Brazil squad, but I respect the decision. I’m playing regularly and trying to do my best to come back [into the squad]. Have I been told why I wasn’t picked? No.”

Chelsea return to action with a home clash against Crystal Palace on 1 April.
