Ian Wright: Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn’t harming Man United duo, he’s helping them
The former Arsenal striker rubbishes the suggestion that the Manchester United striker is not good news for Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford
Ian Wright has rubbished the suggestion that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is killing the Manchester United careers of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
The 35-year-old moved to Manchester United in a free transfer from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window last year.
Ibrahimovic has scored 26 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions during in his first campaign at the 20-time English champions.
However, the retired Sweden international’s arrival has forced Martial and Rashford down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.
The France forward scored 11 goals in 49 games in the 2015-16 season following his move from Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco, while Rashford netted eight goals in 18 appearances after making his Premier League debut against Arsenal.
One caller on BBC Radio’s 606 podcast suggested that Ibrahimovic is damaging the progress of Martial and Rashford, which prompted a passionate response from Arsenal legend Wright.
“Ibrahimovic will be there next year, but Martial and Rashford will be there for another 10 years. What Ibrahimovic is giving them now is only going to help them. They are playing with him, it’s only going to help them,” Wright said.
Martial moved to Manchester United in a 36m deal from French side Monaco under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal last summer.
