Frank Lampard admitted that he was hugely impressed by Ander Herrera’s performance alongside Michael Carrick in Manchester United’s goalless draw with Manchester City on Thursday night.

Herrera and Carrick played the full 90 minutes in the heart of Manchester United’s midfielder at The Etihad on Thursday night as Jose Mourinho’s men claimed a point to keep their top-four bid on track.

Marouane Fellaini was sent off late on for a needless head-butt on Sergio Aguero but the Red Devils held on to claim a valuable point and leave their top-four fate in their own hands.

Herrera has been in fine form for Manchester United in recent weeks and former Chelsea midfielder Lampard was very impressed by the Spaniard on Thursday night once again.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Lampard said: “I have to give credit to the midfield.

“I won’t give credit to Fellaini after what happened at the end. But Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick worked their socks off. The back four moved from side to side.”

Reflecting on the result, Lampard added: “I was slightly surprised by Manchester United. We did feel that they were going to defend deep and sit behind the ball but they did it more than we imagined.

“They definitely played for that [a draw] – they never over-committed players at any time.”
