Ander Herrera has told Manchester United fans just how grateful he is to Jose Mourinho for giving him a chance to impress at Old Trafford this season.

Herrera has played a key role for the Red Devils under the Portuguese coach in recent months and was named man of the match as he helped Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday.

It all seems a far cry from the apparent uncertainty about Herrera’s future at the club following the confirmation of Mourinho’s appointment last summer.

Herrera, 27, has scored one goal and made five assists in 25 Premier League games for Manchester United so far this season to help Mourinho’s men up to fifth place in the table.

And the Spaniard has revealed his delight at earning regular playing time under Mourinho at Old Trafford this season.

Asked about the influence Mourinho has had on him this season, Herrera told United Review: “I am very thankful to him.

“This season has been the most regular one for me at the club and that is with Mourinho on the bench. I am very happy.

“He gave me, from the first day, a lot of confidence and he told me I was going to be an important player for him. I will always be thankful but football changes.

“We have great players and Manchester United has the capacity to sign big players, so I cannot sleep. I have to keep working, performing and giving what the manager wants me to give.”
