Matteo Darmian states his prediction for Anderlecht v Man United
Matteo Darmian warns his Manchester United team-mates that Anderlecht are set to offer a stern test of their Europa League credentials
Matteo Darmian has warned his Manchester United team-mates that Anderlecht are set to offer a stern test of their Europa League credentials on Thursday night.
With Manchester United still outside the top-four spots in the Premier League, the Europa League has taken on a greater significance for Jose Mourinho’s men this term.
The Red Devils will secure their place in the Champions League for next season if they are able to win Europe’s second tier club competition this term.
Mourinho is currently preparing his side for the first leg of their quarter-final clash against Anderlecht in Brussels on Thursday night.
And Italian defender Darmian has talked up the importance of the Red Devils taking a positive result from that game.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website, Darmian said: “I think it will be a difficult game for us.
“We want to progress into the semi-finals so we now have to recover well and start thinking about this game because I think it will be very difficult out there. We have to be concentrated and try to play with good intention and focus. We will try to win as well.
“Of course [being favourites brings added pressure], but I think we are in the Europa League and we always knew there is the possibility to win the trophy. We try. We will try. We know that we can do it but we have to demonstrate it on the pitch.”
Manchester United will then take on Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they look to gain revenge for their two defeats by the Blues at Stamford Bridge this term, in both the FA Cup and the top flight.
