Michael Owen states his prediction for Anderlecht v Man United
Michael Owen looks ahead to Manchester United's crunch clash with Anderlecht on Thursday night in the Europa League
Michael Owen is backing Manchester United to beat Anderlecht in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash on Thursday night – but only just.
The Red Devils head into the game in good form, fresh from having returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend.
However, Jose Mourinho’s men are still outside the top four and their best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League may come by winning the Europa League this season.
Manchester United travel to Belgium on Thursday night for the first leg of their last-eight tie, before the return game at Old Trafford later this month.
And former Manchester United striker Owen is expecting to see the Red Devils take a slender lead back to Old Trafford from Thursday’s game.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “Despite the fact that the hosts have scored in all ten of their Europa League ties so far this season, I don’t expect to see many goals in Belgium.
“The Purple and Whites will be well aware this is their sternest test in the competition and they will be well aware of United’s attacking threat.
“I think United will take a lead back to Old Trafford but don’t expect to see many goals.”
Manchester United finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last season before Mourinho was brought in.
