Gary Neville sends warning to Anthony Martial ahead of Man City v Man United
Gary Neville tells Anthony Martial that he needs to improve his work-rate for Manchester United
Gary Neville has told Anthony Martial that he needs to improve his work-rate for Manchester United.
The French striker has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Red Devils first team this season since Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Old Trafford last summer.
Martial has been limited to just 13 starts in the Premier League under Mourinho and has scored four goals and made five assists in the top flight so far this term.
The striker earned praise for his performance against Burnley on Sunday as he scored one and set up the other in the 2-0 win at Turf Moor and was named man of the match.
However, former Manchester United defender Neville says Martial has plenty of work to do as he bids to hold down a regular spot in the first team between now and the end of the season.
Neville told Sky Sports after Manchester United’s win over Burnley: “I’ve been quite critical of Anthony Martial.
“He hasn’t done anything near enough for me. I’m not talking about goals, skill and talent. He has more skills and talent than you could ever imagine for a football player.
“I don’t even care about the price tag. When you’re a Manchester United fan or player, you know what you need to do to succeed at this football club. Work ethic is critical.
“I’ve never seen a player at Manchester United succeed who hasn’t worked hard and done as much off the ball as one the ball. There are the odd exceptions like Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 40 goals in two seasons. His work rate wasn’t wonderful.
“I’m not talking about Martial running back and defending all the time, I’m talking about the runs behind the defence. Watching him quite a lot this season, he isn’t doing enough for his team.”
Martial will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Manchester City in Thursday night’s crunch derby clash at The Etihad.
