Antonio Conte urged to make this Chelsea signing to replace Diego Costa
Danny Higginbotham believes Everton striker Romelu Lukaku would be capable of replacing Chelsea star Diego Costa
Romelu Lukaku would be a good signing to replace Diego Costa if the controversial striker leaves Chelsea in the summer, according to Danny Higginbotham.
Costa rediscovered his best form at the start of the 2016-17 season under new manager Antonio Conte but the centre-forward’s goals have started to dry up in recent months.
Nevertheless, the Spain international has still scored a credible 17 goals in 30 appearances in the Premier League to help Chelsea piece together a four-point lead at the top of the table.
Costa has been heavily linked with a lucrative move to China throughout the campaign, with reports of a bust-up with Conte about interest from Asia in the January transfer window.
As a result, Chelsea have been linked with a host of strikers ahead of the summer transfer window.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Friday afternoon, Higginbotham backed Costa to leave Chelsea and suggested Everton star Lukaku could be the replacement for Spanish star.
“From Chelsea’s point of view, before they let him go, Chelsea will have to get a player in,” Higginbotham said.
“He will be very difficult to replace. They are talking about Romelu Lukaku. He might be the man who comes in to replace him.”
Lukaku has scored 24 times in 31 games in the Premier League this season, which is more goals than any other player in the top flight.
The Belgium international moved to Everton from Chelsea in 2013 after Jose Mourinho deemed the striker surplus to requirements.
