Jamie Carragher admitted that Arsenal showed some strong character on Monday night as they bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

The Gunners headed into Monday’s clash at the Riverside Stadium under intense pressure and having won just two of their last eight Premier League games.

However, goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil wrapped up the three points for Arsene Wenger’s men and handed them a much-needed boost ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher claimed that Arsenal showed that they have some characters in their squad with Monday’s win, as the Gunners players celebrated with the fans after the game.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “They’ll have been stung by the criticism this week.

“We’ve been there ourselves when you come into the training ground the day after the game and it’s difficult to lift yourself. The training ground becomes a dark place with everyone coming in very down and very flat.

“Arsene Wenger may have thrown the new system in and sometimes it just sparks something. It’s something different and something to get behind.

“It was telling that coming together at the end because there [are] some big characters there and it felt like a big win for them, not just because of three more points in the race for the top four but to quell the criticism they’ve had.”
