Arsene Wenger has revealed that Mesut Ozil is determined to win the Champions League with Arsenal.

The Gunners were emphatically dumped out of Europe’s elite club competition last month when they suffered a humiliating 10-2 aggregate defeat by Bayern Munich in the last 16.

It has been a frustrating season for Arsenal, with the Gunners currently facing a battle on their hands to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The north London club could still end the campaign with some silverware, however, as they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley later this month.

Ozil’s situation at Arsenal remains a source of speculation after both he and Alexis Sanchez entered into the final 15 months of their contracts at The Emirates.

And Wenger has lifted the lid on Ozil’s mindset as Arsenal prepare for their Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Wenger told a news conference at London Colney on Friday: “He is very ambitious and he wants to win the Champions League. He’s come out many times saying that. If you look at the two games and take the first 45 minutes of the two games, we were qualified but then went out in such an emphatic way.

“It was difficult to take for everybody and maybe even more for him because it’s a big part of his ambition.

“He cares. What I wanted to say in that is that people often reproach him by saying that he doesn’t care because of his style of play, but he cares much more than people think he does.”
