Gary Neville makes claim about Arsenal ahead of FA Cup clash with Man City
Gary Neville says Arsenal's players were fighting for their places at Wembley against Middlesbrough on Monday night
Gary Neville has claimed that some of Arsenal’s players stepped their game up in the 2-1 win at Middlesbrough on Monday night because they were playing for their places in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.
The Gunners returned to winning ways in the top flight with a battling win at the Riverside Stadium thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
The win was a welcome one for the north London side and handed Arsene Wenger’s men a much-needed boost ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
And former Manchester United defender Neville has claimed that some of Arsenal’s players were clearly trying to prove themselves to Wenger ahead of Sunday’s showdown.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said: “It takes the pressure off before that big game at the weekend.
“I think tonight we saw a lot of players playing for their places at Wembley. There was a lot of effort in that game tonight from Arsenal’s players.”
Monday’s win left Arsenal in sixth place in the Premier League table but the Gunners know that they can move to within three points of third-placed Liverpool if they win their two games in hand over the Reds.
