Paul Merson has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal need a clear-out before investing in new players in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have endured a miserable campaign under Wenger after producing some disappointing performances in the Champions League and the Premier League.

Arsenal lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16, including a 5-1 loss to Carlo Ancelotti’s side at The Emirates.

The Gunners have lost to Chelsea and Liverpool in recent months to leave their top-four hopes in doubt, while Crystal Palace, Watford and West Brom have all defeated Arsenal.

Wenger’s much-maligned squad do have the chance to end the campaign on a positive note with victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday to secure a third final appearance in four seasons.

Writing in his Daily Star column about Arsenal’s predicament, the former midfielder called for wholesale changes at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

“If Arsenal want to challenge next season, they need a clear-out and they need to buy players,” Merson said.

“They have to start talking to players now, not after Wenger’s announced his decision.”
