Pundit: Why this player will score for Arsenal v Tottenham
Phil Thompson is backing Alexis Sanchez to fire Arsenal to a 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Sunday
Phil Thompson is backing Alexis Sanchez to score for Arsenal in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham in Sunday’s north London derby clash.
The Gunners head into the game having found some form in recent matches after winning their last three outings in all competitions.
However, Tottenham have been in superb form this season and have won nine of their last 10 games in the Premier League to leave them as serious contenders for the title.
Sanchez was the hero last weekend as his extra-time winner fired Arsenal to a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
And former Liverpool man Thompson is tipping Sanchez to open the scoring for the Gunners at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “I think Arsenal have found a bit of togetherness. Wenger has got the three at the back to give them a bit more solidity, although it’s a very different back three to the more creative trio that Spurs have.
“The three at the back obviously worked for Chelsea in the semi-final as Spurs struggled to break it down even though they had a lot of the ball. I think it could be a similar affair.
“It will be interesting to see whether Wenger leaves Olivier Giroud out and gives Sanchez a bit more freedom, as he’s the key to producing a bit of magic.”
A footnote added: “Thommo predicts 1-1 and Sanchez to score first.”
Arsenal head into the game in sixth place in the Premier League table as they look to claw their way back into the top four before the season is out.
