Antonio Conte gives latest injury update on key Chelsea duo after Man United loss
Antonio Conte explains the real reasons why Thibaut Courtois and Marcos Alonso did not feature for Chelsea against Manchester United
Antonio Conte has revealed that Thibaut Courtois missed Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United due to an ankle injury.
The goalkeeper was sidelined for the clash at Old Trafford and his replacement Asmir Begovic was unable to prevent the Blues from slipping to a disappointing loss to the Red Devils.
However, The Sport Review understands that Chelsea are hopeful Courtois will be fit for the Blues’ crunch FA Cup semi-final clash against Tottenham on Saturday evening.
Conte also delivered an update on defender Marcos Alonso, after the Spaniard did not complete the warm-up at Old Trafford and subsequently missed the game.
The Italian revealed that the Spanish full-back had been suffering from a virus before the game and that he did not feel up to playing.
Conte told his post-match news conference: “After a defeat it’s not right to go into this situation. Courtois had an injury during the week, and for this reason he wasn’t available today. It’s right to focus on the game and not to find an excuse.
“Alonso had a virus during the night and we tried with the doctor to recover him for the game but it wasn’t possible. For this reason, he didn’t play.”
Sunday’s loss left Chelsea top of the Premier League table but with their lead over Tottenham Hotspur cut down to just four points.
