Frank Lampard has heaped praise on David Luiz for the huge improvements he has shown at Chelsea this season under Antonio Conte.

The Brazilian has earned plenty of praise for the impact he has had at Stamford Bridge this term since being brought back to the club by the Italian coach last summer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Luiz has been ever-present in the Chelsea side this season and has scored one goal in 28 Premier League games so far this term.

The Brazil international has slotted seamlessly into Chelsea’s back three this season since Conte opted to move to a 3-2-3 formation at Stamford Bridge.

And Lampard has given his verdict on the way Luiz has improved at Stamford Bridge this term under the Italian manager’s guidance.

Speaking to BBC Sport on Saturday, Lampard said: “For me, he’s always been a world class defender. I think in his first period at Chelsea he overplayed at times.

“The other thing for me was that he was always in a back four. He was getting exposed.

“The main thing that’s helped him since he’s come back to the club is playing in a back three. He can play central, it gives him a lot of time on the ball where his great range of passing can start attacks.

“No one wants to close him down because he’s got that nice central role. It’s been a major help for him.

“On the defensive side, I think it’s given him confidence to not worry about being exposed as he was before.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action with a crunch home clash against Southampton on Tuesday night as they look for a win to take them a step closer towards the title.
