Gary Neville reacts to Anthony Martial’s display in Man United’s 2-0 win at Burnley
The Manchester United legend names Anthony Martial as his man of the match
Gary Neville heaped praise on Anthony Martial for his response to Jose Mourinho’s criticism after the Manchester United striker scored in a 2-0 win at Burnley.
The France international has seen his commitment questioned by the Red Devils boss in recent months after struggling to make an impression under Mourinho.
Martial was on the bench for Manchester United’s 2-1 extra-time win against Anderlecht in their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
But Mourinho turned to Martial for Sunday’s trip to Burnley and the 21-year-old rewarded his manager’s faith with the opening goal at Turf Moor.
The former Monaco forward combined with Ander Herrera to break the deadlock in the 21st minute before Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney extended their lead six minutes before half-time.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Martial’s man-of-the-match performance against Sean Dyche’s side, former Manchester United defender Neville said:
“I picked Martial for the man of the match. Aside from his goal and his assist, he set himself a standard with his work-ethic and his running, particularly after the criticism in midweek.”
Manchester United are in fifth place in the Premier League table but a point behind Manchester City in the race to secure a place in next season’s Champions League competition.
