Ian Wright: What striker would have to bring to Chelsea or Man United
The former Arsenal striker believes Romelu Lukaku has improvements to make before the Everton star is ready for a big-money move
Ian Wright has warned Romelu Lukaku that he would be under pressure to become the focal point of Chelsea or Manchester United if the striker completes a big-money summer move.
The Belgium international is the Premier League’s leading goal-scorer after a return of 23 goals in 31 games in the 2016-17 top-flight campaign.
Lukaku, who has also made five assists this season, has been linked with a potential return to Premier League leaders Chelsea less than four seasons after the striker quit Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United are touted as another potential destination for the Belgian centre-forward as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.
However, former Arsenal striker Wright believes Lukaku still has more work to do on his game before the Everton striker is ready to move to a top European club.
“He has the potential to go to another level,” Wright told BBC Radio Five Live’s 606 show.
“His game has to be a lot tighter than it is. He scores goals. He has the physical attributes. He is blasting past people at the moment.
“If he was at a big club, there would be an onus on him being a focal part of the team. Luis Suarez went to Barcelona and made them better.
“When teams are investing the type of money they will have to get Lukaku, he has to go and make the teams better.”
Lukaku moved to Everton in a club-record 27m deal from Chelsea in 2013 after Mourinho was unable to guarantee the Belgium international regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
