Jamie Carragher: These two Liverpool players big issue for Jurgen Klopp
The Liverpool legend raises questions about the fitness of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip in the 2016-17 season
Jamie Carragher believes the inability of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip to remain fit is giving Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a big headache.
The Merseyside club signed Matip in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window but the Cameroon international has struggled to stay fit in his first season in English football.
Indeed, the promising 25-year-old defender has only started 20 games in the Premier League this season, while Lovren has registered 22 starts in the 2016-17 campaign.
However, Estonia international Ragnar Klavan has often been asked to fill in for Lovren or Matip which is reflected in the summer signing’s 18 appearances in the Premier League this term.
Liverpool have conceded 39 times in 31 games in the current Premier League campaign, which has led to questions being asked of Klopp’s leaky defence.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about Liverpool’s poor defensive performances, ex-Red Carragher singled out the persistent injury problems of Lovren and Matip as a contributing factor.
“A big issue for Klopp, though, is he can’t get his best defensive partnership on the pitch regularly,” Carragher said.
“Neither Dejan Lovren nor Joel Matip are robust enough to cope with the rigours of English football as they have only played together as a unit 10 times from a possible 30 matches.”
