Jose Mourinho felt that his Manchester United players responded to Liverpool’s comeback win with an impressive 3-0 victory at Sunderland to keep their top-four hopes alive.

The Red Devils were looking to end a run of back-to-back stalemates in the Premier League which has undermined Manchester United’s hopes of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in the second half at the Britannia Stadium.

The 18-time English champions moved nine points clear of Mourinho’s side ahead of the Red Devils’s trip to the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.

However, Manchester United eased to a comfortable win thanks to goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford.

Speaking to BBC Sport about Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, Mourinho said:

“The result was good. We resisted the results of yesterday when Manchester City and Liverpool won, they left us in a position of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It was ‘yes’.

“We got three points and it was a solid display. It was against a team that is sad, it’s normal. Against a team that is sad, if you score before then it’s difficult for them to react.

“You could feel the negative feeling around the team. That is felt with a team close to relegation.”
