Jurgen Klopp defended Alberto Moreno after the defender attracted criticism for his cameo performance in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at West Brom.

The Spain international was a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s close-fought win at the Hawthorns Stadium as Klopp looked to secure three points.

Roberto Firmino broke the deadlock in the first half thanks to Roberto Firmino’s close-range header following Lucas Leiva’s flick-on.

Moreno had the chance to make it 2-0 in added time with Ben Foster out of his goal for a West Brom set piece at The Hawthorns.

However, the former Sevilla full-back opted to go alone instead of using support from Firmino and Daniel Sturridge with the goal at his mercy.

Moreno was heavily criticised for his decision to shoot instead of use the support of his team-mates but Klopp defended the Liverpool star.

“He could have played to Daniel, but maybe if he plays he is offside? He had a hard few weeks, because he didn’t feel well after Stoke,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“I said ‘it is already a good week for you, it could have been perfect’.”

Moreno has been out of favour under Klopp this season since a disappointing performance in a 4-3 win at Arsenal on the opening day of the campaign.
