Paul Merson has claimed that Arsene Wenger will announce that he is staying at Arsenal if the Gunners beat Manchester City in Sunday’s crunch FA Cup semi-final.

The Frenchman’s situation has been a source of relentless speculation in recent months after Arsenal’s poor form since the turn of the year.

Wenger, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has watched his Arsenal side be dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich and also slip out of the top four in the Premier League.

However, former Arsenal star Merson is expecting to see Wenger commit his future to the north London side and announce that he has signed a new deal – if the Gunners beat Manchester City on Sunday.

Writing in his column for The Daily Star, Merson said: “It’s a shame Arsenal are the team the others all wanted to play in the semi-finals.

“When was the last time that has happened? Sunday’s semi-final is another pressure game for Arsene Wenger.

“If they win, he will probably come out and say he’s signed a new contract. I think he’s waiting for a big win to announce it – and beating City would be a big win.”
