Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal are facing a serious uphill struggle to finish in the top four this season.

The north Londoners have been in stuttering form in recent weeks and have dropped down into sixth place in the table after a miserable run of form in the top flight.

However, Wenger watched his side return to winning ways in the Premier League on Monday night when they secured a 2-1 win at Middlesbrough thanks to goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal know that they can move to within three points of third-placed Liverpool if they win their two games in hand over the Reds.

However, Arsenal boss Wenger has conceded that the north London side face a serious uphill battle in trying to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“For us the clarity is there,” Wenger told his post-match news conference on Monday night.

“We have to win every game to have a chance to get into the top four and starting tonight.

“I think we give a bit more, made it seem a bit more serene, you could see that in some occasions we were a bit overcautious tonight and played with situation we are not used to, and hopefully that will give us a bit more confidence.”

He added: “Mathematically it is still possible even if it is difficult, but we have to give it a go.”
