Martin Keown: This is what Chelsea manager Antonio Conte got wrong at Man United
The former Arsenal defender believes Antonio Conte got his Chelsea tactics wrong at Manchester United
Martin Keown has criticised Antonio Conte’s decision to draft in Kurt Zouma to replace Marcos Alonso in Chelsea’s 2-0 loss at Manchester United last weekend.
The Spanish left-back was feeling poorly in the warm up at Old Trafford which prompted Conte to move Cesar Azpilicueta to left wing-back and start Zouma at centre-half.
Both Azpilicueta and Zouma struggled against the Red Devils as Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera got on the score sheet in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
Chelsea will face another of their bitter rivals this weekend as the Premier League leaders take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Spurs are Chelsea’s closest challengers for the Premier League title after the north London side moved to within four points of Conte’s men with six games to go.
Writing in his Daily Mail column about Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United, former Arsenal defender Keown questioned Conte’s tactics at Old Trafford.
“Chelsea will need Marcos Alonso back fit. Conte made a mistake against Manchester United by moving Cesar Azpilicueta up to left wing back and bringing in Kurt Zouma at centre back.
“When a key player like Alonso is injured you want to minimise the changes. Conte would have been better served by not upsetting the back three and just bringing in Willian on the left.
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season.
