Paul Merson: Summer Chelsea signing should be on PFA award shortlist
Paul Merson says Chelsea star Marcos Alonso could be among the nominees for the PFA player of the year award this season
Paul Merson believes that Marcos Alonso has been one of Chelsea’s top players this season.
The Spanish full-back has been a regular fixture in Antonio Conte’s first team this term since arriving at the club from Fiorentina in the summer transfer window.
Alonso has scored five goals and made two assists in 26 Premier League games this season for the Blues but was forced to sit out Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend due to illness.
The defender will be hoping to play a key role in helping Chelsea win the Premier League title in his first season at the club.
And former Arsenal star Merson has been extremely impressed by what he has seen from the defender in recent months.
Merson wrote in his column for The Daily Star: “Losing Marcos Alonso against United was really big for them.
“He’s been so good this season he could almost be in the conversation for Player of the Year with the other nominees.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action on Tuesday night with a home clash against Southampton as they look to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.
