Paul Merson: The difference between the Chelsea manager and Pep Guardiola
The former Arsenal star singles out Chelsea boss Antonio Conte for praise but is critical of Pep Guardiola
Paul Merson believes Pep Guardiola has made multiple mistakes as Manchester City manager this season unlike his Chelsea rival Antonio Conte.
The Italian coach has enjoyed an incredible first season in the Premier League with the west London side as Chelsea close in on the Premier League title.
Conte’s side were 2-1 winners against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night courtesy of Eden Hazard’s double either side of half-time.
Chelsea have only lost two of their last 24 games in the English top flight since their switch to a 3-4-3 formation to leave Conte’s men seven points clear at the top of the table.
Manchester City, on the other hand, are in a battle to secure a place in the Champions League next season and are a mere four points ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United.
While Merson believes Conte has quickly addressed issues with his Chelsea side, the former Arsenal midfielder claimed that Guardiola has made numerous mistakes through the campaign.
“Conte is top of the pile right now because he realised when what he was doing wasn’t working and fixed it,” Merson told the Daily Star.
“He’s hardly had to change anything since.Chelsea have the most settled starting line-up in the league and look like worthy champions. But Guardiola keeps on making mistake after mistake, and if he was Manuel Pellegrini he’d have been sacked by now.
“Arsenal are breathing down his neck in the race for a Champions League spot and if City miss out, there should be serious questions asked with the money they’ve spent.”
