Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink warns reported Chelsea target isn’t ready to replace John Terry
The Chelsea legend doesn't believe Burnley defender Michael Keane is ready to fill John Terry's shoes
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has warned Chelsea that Burnley defender Michael Keane isn’t ready to replace their departing captain John Terry.
The 36-year-old announced that he will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season earlier this week as the Blues skipper looks to lift his fifth Premier League title.
Terry has struggled to break into Antonio Conte’s starting line-up this season despite his undoubted experience after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, the former Juventus coach has favoured Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David Luiz in his back three, with Kurt Zouma even ahead of Terry.
Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Burnley defender Keane as the newly-capped England international enters the final months of his contract.
However, former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink, who played alongside Terry in the early stages of the centre-half’s career, hinted that it would be a big ask for Keane to fill the void left by the former England international.
“It wouldn’t be a straight swap. It’s a big part to fill, even though he has done exceptionally well at Burnley,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports News HQ.
“He is a player who is improving. He is quick and he is a good defender. He is very comfortable on the ball which is needed if you’re a defender at a top-six club.”
Chelsea are four points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the title race.
