Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to ease to a 2-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

Antonio Conte’s side moved seven points clear of their closest title rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night courtesy of a 4-2 victory over Southampton.

Goals from Eden Hazard, Gary Cahill and Diego Costa secured a comfortable win for the Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge.

However, Tottenham cut Chelsea’s lead to four points after Christian Eriksen scored a dramatic winner in their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea will have the chance to restore their seven-point advantage with a win at Everton before Tottenham host Arseanl in the north London derby at White Hart Lane.

Writing in his Sky Sports column about the Premier League clash between Everton and Chelsea, Merson said: “Everton are a weird team.

“They get to a certain stage, you think they’re set to kick on for a top four or top-five place, and they just melt away.

“A few weeks ago they were flying, went to Middlesbrough and drew 0-0. Then they were flying again and got well beaten by Tottenham. And then they were flying again, go to West Ham and draw 0-0.

“They have not taken that next step and I worry for them. It will be a competitive game but Chelsea should have too much.”

Chelsea produced one of the best team performances of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign against Everton at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.

Antonio Conte’s side underlined their status as title favourites with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Toffees back in October.
